I misinterpreted this sign, thinking it meant that everything behind the sign---including the road---was private.
My plan to visit Promontory Point was crushed. Dejected, I turned around and headed for Salt Lake City. A later phone
conversation (with the person who answered my call to the posted number) revealed that the land on either
side of the road was private but that the road is public (owned by Box Elder County). Property owners have posted
this sign in an attempt to prevent continuing abuse of their property by vistors who are thoughtless and
sometimes nasty---I couldn't believe some of the horror stories the man related to me.
Setting foot on any private property in this area is viewed with suspicion and promptly reported to the authorities.
