Gate 74 of the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR)

Floating Island, Utah (northeast of Wendover) view map

While driving around Floating Island I got curious about tire tracks leading onto the playa. The tracks led here: Gate 74 of the Air Force's Bombing and Gunnery Range (also known as the Utah Test and Training Range).

This point is very close to the Hastings Cut-off, the route taken across the salt flats by the ill-fated Donner-Reed wagon train party . It must have been hell for those people to cross this landscape with narrow-wheeled wagons.

The fence here runs north-south; the view is to the northeast. In the "Borders and Boundaries" gallery, this photo is the one exception to the gallery’s description: I did not cross the boundary.
