New handle design

Crater Island, Utah (26 mi./ 42 km northeast of Wendover)

This photo, taken near the end of the third handcart hike, shows the changes in handle design I had made for this hike.

1. Orangeish-colored 1x3 boards replaced thick dowels to enable a new method of mounting the crosspiece dowel

2. Crosspiece dowel is secured with wood blocks and screws, stronger than the “wire and cord” method of the previous hike. This change also made installing and removing the crosspiece easier.

3. Vertical dowels created comfortable grasping positions for pushing the cart.

During rest breaks I usually let the “kickstand” support the handcart, but parking the cart in this manner shows the handles better. The kickstand is the vertical board attached to the cargo box.

At the beginning of the hike I photographed the handles from a different angle.
