During World War II, a Japanese airplane that had been launched from a submarine off the Oregon
coast dropped incendiary bombs in the forest about nine miles (14km) east of Brookings. The intent
was to start forest fires that would divert important resources from the country's war machine.
Bombs were dropped on two occasions. These two events were the only time that the continental
United States was bombed from a plane during the war. (Bomb balloons are another matter.)
The picture shows the place on Wheeler Ridge where the first bomb exploded.

Getting here is a pain in the ass: after five miles of asphalt driving comes 13 miles
of gravel roads in forest characterized by countless ups and downs, curves to the left,
and curves to the right. An attractive trail takes one from the road to the bombing
site, passing some redwoods along the way.
A one-sheet description of the "Bombsite Trail," with driving instructions,
is available at the information center at the Crissey Field State Recreation Site,
on the west side of the highway just south of Brookings.
