K&E Drawing Instruments

This Keuffel and Esser drawing kit was purchased used in 1965. I got it at the
University Bookstore in Seattle while I was a freshman at the University of
Washington. The general engineering curriculum required at least one class in
engineering drawing, which is why I bought this drawing kit. An unexpected
benefit of using these instruments was the lesson in physics it taught every
time an ink tool was filled by dipping its parallel points into an ink bottle:
the ink stayed in place by capillary action and surface tension---amazing!

The price of the kit (about $5) was a fantastic bargain at the time: as I recall,
a new kit cost around $30---a princely sum in those days! Alas, it was all for
naught: although I enjoyed the drawing class, I was not meant to be an engineer;
after a year and a half of engineering subjects, I flunked out of that school
and made a drastic change of majors. Since then, I have used the instruments
less than a dozen times. I cannot bear to part with this memento.
