September 21: Neighborhood Lavender

Studio City, CA

Went for a walk down our street this evening, looking for a suitable PaD subject. Many of our neighbors have lovely yards, all full of roses and native Southern California plants. It was a good opportunity to practice my DoF skills. I was having trouble choosing the shot I wanted to post, so I asked Andy, and he picked the above shot of lavender.

Technically, my favorite is this one:

What do you all think?? All comments welcome.

Both are very nice. I love the above for that rich color and fascinating light ... but I'm a sucker for a clean sharp shot with detail like the one below. Both have good use of dof with some nice bokeh.

Lavender is beautiful... and it is one of the few flowers I can smell! so the lavender for me

The colour in the top one is nice but the second one has a very relaxing effect since it's so soft. Both are excellent though.

I'm going with the lavender because the purple is such an eye catcher. I agree with you though, technically, the second image is better, but with all things considered...I like the first image best.

they are both lovely and I like the first one better. I'll bet the butterflies like it, too.

Nice shot Lisa, I like the first one better because of the background. Generally, a shallow DOF looks better if it is not against a very bright bg. I also love the colors on this one. Good job.

I like them both and I agree w/you that the bottom one is sharper. However the lavender one has great color and I can almost smell it. ;-)
