Tambo Destruction

Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

I went to the Tambo Mudflats this morning (September 3, 2004) hoping to get a glimpse of the Whimbrels. Low tide is forecast at 6:19 am, and I hit the site at about 6:35 am. Coincidentally, Mike Lu and Nilo Arribas were already there with the crew of Unang Hirit to film the birds.

Mike, Nilo and the TV crew left shortly for the Asiaworld Complex. I stayed behind wishing for some exciting arrivals. Indeed, something did arrive. Not exciting but horrible. An Iron T. Rex (a huge backhoe) ambled noisily into view and promptly started to tear up the vegetation along the canal bank opposite my position.

This vegetation was the home and playground of the birds I'm photographing. I could not believe my eyes, but the Iron T. Rex was totally destroying it! As a civil engineer, I'm positive that the grasses and shrubs are situated high enough in the canal bank so as not to affect the water flow. I could not fathom the reason why this destruction was being done for no obvious benefit.

Heavy as my heart was, I could do nothing but shoot the scene and post the pics in my galleries.

Feeling safe, the B. Rail returns to the undergrowth. It comes out a few moments later with a chick trailing behind. Little do they know that in a few minutes, their home will become mounds of upturned earth.

A Little Heron patiently hunts for prey near the doomed bank. Everything is calm, not unlike the peace and quiet before the onset of a raging storm.

The silence of the morning is broken by the distant rumble of arriving heavy equipment, crawling along the canal bank that it presumably tore the day before.

The equipment operator relieves himself. He may just be following instructions, but in my view, his hands are just as dirty as those of his superiors, and his superiors' principals.

The sign says it all - nobody is welcome here, not even birders.
