Mt. Makiling - Part XIII

Fatbirder's Top 1000 Birding Websites

In this 13th gallery for Mt. Makiling, I got lucky as I was able to get the pics of two of my most wanted endemics - the Philippine Trogon and Philippine Falconet.

It was also fortunate that I had the Canon 20D with me. I disciplined myself not to use flash on the Trogon to preserve the fidelity of its beautiful colors as much as possible. As can be noted from the EXIF data, I had to dial the ISO to the limit (ISO 3200) to do this. The 20D didn't disappoint.

The Canon 400 5.6L deserves equal credit, too. I had to use a Sigma 2x teleconverter on the the tiny "raptorette" to bring it a bit closer. With the lens' native sharpness, the pics of the Philippine Falconet have enough details with the 2x TC despite the challenging lighting, the light rain and the tiny size of the subject, made worse by its perching so high in the forest canopy.
