I absent mindedly used my Sigma 1.4X with my Canon 300/4. Took a bunch of (auto racing) shots. Realized my "mistake." Switched to my Canon 1.4X Type II. When I saw the results, I was surprised the Sigma shots looked O.K. I then did a careful test with both 1.4 xtenders, tripod, 100 iso, mirror up, remote release, Putora "Sharpness Indicator" resolution chart and found that the Sigma 1.4X was truly slightly but noticably sharper then my Canon 1.4X type II.

Romy, thanks for sharing this test --- and for your reply to my question on dpreview. Most helpful, and interesting. I think I'll try a Tamron TC with the 100 - 400 and see how it does. With my aging eyes, autofocus is nice! Someday I still want to make it to Manila and see these birds of yours!

When I get access again to my freind's 300 f4 L IS (he's currently out of the country), I'll see if I can do this shoot-out.

Would like to see a teleconverter shootout with the 300 f/4 lens. -- Victor
