Patuxent Research Refuge is located just off of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295) and is divided into the North Tract, Central Tract and South Tract. The total Refuge consists of nearly 13,000 acres. The North and South Tracts are open to visitors. The Central Tract is where biologists conduct research, including the endangered Whooping Crane, and is not open to the public. The South Tract has a number of trails and has a modern and beautiful Visitor Center. However, I spend most of my time at the North Tract, located right off of Route 198. They are open most days from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information is available at the following site: http://www.fws.gov/northeast/patuxent/index.htm
This gallery provides a photo journey into the birding world at Patuxent. 99% of the photos were taken at the North Tract, mostly along the Wildlife Drive. If you get a chance, stop by and visit. You might just see a bird that you have never seen before.
