DM is, as you’ll know well if you’ve watched his PAD over the years, very creative and talented. Whereas I’m a complete plodder, managing adequately most of the time (except in recent weeks, where adequate has crumbled to dust) but never excelling at anything, he’s just plain brilliant. I am in complete awe of him most of the time (except when he abandons his socks in odd places and I’m sure every woman in the world will sympathise with that one).

At the moment we share a den and share office space although our desks, currently nestling side-by-side, are getting a divorce soon (long story and I’d normally say it’s for another day but as there are only two more weeks of my PAD to go I may not get around to it.

It’s not uncommon for me to come into the room, sit down at my desk and find a whole load of pencil sketches on reams of paper on my desk from where he’s been working through some ideas for illustrations and these are his “first drafts” which later get worked up on the computer. These pencil sketches, like the socks, seem to get abandoned in strange places, though these are rather more palatable.

So, this morning, when I came into the room to see this sheet of paper on my desk, I was intrigued to say the very least. Not that I disapprove, simply that where his thoughts were when he was writing this was a mystery.

When I loaded the pic onto my PC and asked him what was going on when he wrote this, the explanation was rather more banal that I’d hoped. He’s been looking at a message board on the stock agency where he sells his drawings and seen that it’s possible to search itunes for words in song titles (I assume it isn’t clever enough to search the whole lyrics). The poster of the message had suggested a game to see how many times opposite words appear…..this is the result of DMs search.

So, I thought he was going soft in his old age but it turns out to be an itunes game.

He was at pains to point out though that the reference to “God” is, in fact, a song called “Godless” (by the Dandy Warhols), not one about God at all. So, no “God only knows” or even “God save the queen”……well, that’s alright then!!! Anyway, he may be Godless but he's certainly not loveless.

If I had an itunes music library, which I don’t, “God only Knows” would be there although the Folk Devils wouldn’t be……sorry, an obscure joke that probably only three or four people will understand….. (BTW - I'm MUCH too cool to have an itunes library - where are your ears people, MP3s sound shit.)

All I know is that “he’s made me acknowledge the devil in me” – so, the first to say where that comes from gets the cool dude prize of the day from me. (No money, no opulent gift, just the accolade – isn’t that enough?)

Nothing if not controversial last year...in all sorts of ways it now transpires.
