19th january 2008 - swotting

David said to me yesterday that for the first time in a long time I didn’t look “desolate” while we were sitting eating our breakfast. I’m going to take that as a good thing.

I have noticed that my shoulders are aching like mad and have realised that it’s because I don’t have them continuously braced, which has been a permanent feature of my life for many months. I had been aware that I was doing it but unable to stop myself and now I have found I’m not so again this must be an improvement.

Meanwhile we’ve both become completely fascinated by bees. Did you know, for example, that a drone (a male bee) has no father, only a grandfather? Only females (workers and queens) have fathers.

Did you know that honeybees are estimated to add many millions of pounds into the British economy each year, not because of their honey that is gathered and sold but because of the pollination that they do on agricultural crops? Did you know that there are very few commercial “honey farms” in the UK? Did you know we import 5/6 of the honey we eat in the UK?

Me? I’m exhausted but DM is still thirsty for more knowledge so he’s swotting up late into the evening.

Last year, stupid antics with little bits of plastic.....

Like Gail, I love honey, and Wisconsin is one of the top honey producing states in the US--2nd in 2006. My dad raised bees for awhile when I was a kid. Nancy

I tend to find myself swatting rather than swotting where bees are concerned, fascinating stuff though.
Glad to hear you're not looking desolate, that's only a good look if you're a grouse moor.

It's probably true to say we'd all starve without bees and pollination, isn't it? Best of luck with it!

I didn't know any of those things... but I do love honey!

interesting facts - will always try and buy local honey.
And that bee keeper does not appear to have any protective clothes on! Looking forward to your pics of the gathering :)
