I know this shot won’t win any photographic prizes (unless they give out wooden spoons) but I still rather like it for a number of reasons….
1. Its undoubtedly jaunty angle (sorry Bill M – I know you think that wonky horizons are just plain shoddy but I think this one works well in the context)
2. Goose rock in the background means one thing only – Crantock beach – the best place on the planet.
3. Bare feet – yes, that means it’s been warm enough to dispense with boots and thick socks….at least in the sunshine
4. Whooping it up – I am having a great time
5. Spurs top – Sarah – ‘we’re the seaside, we’re the seaside, we’re the seaside Tott-en-ham!’
6. Splashing in the sea – the ultimate child-like experience – and sometimes nothing else quite works like being a big kid to make my day.
The camera, love marks and all, is balanced on a low rock, which around two minutes after this shot was taken (there were two more attempts at an in-focus one after this one) was snatched off the rock, just as the tide reached it. Another nano-second and the camera would have been full of seawater! Even I draw the line at that – love marks from use yes, salt water in its gubbins, no!
I know the shot is out of focus – believe me it grieves me as much as it does you. BUT the shot is still full of life and that’s what this is all about. I can tell you that trying to focus on sea, while wading in several inches of water, then setting off the self-timer is an art that I suspect not many master and given my lack of technical expertise, I am right at the back of the queue on that one.
Why schizophrenic? Well, let’s face it, it’s only four days since I shot this – not more than 30 miles or so away from the site of today’s pic. On Tuesday morning, if you’d said to me ‘on Saturday, you’ll be on the beach, in balmy weather, paddling, I’d probably have laughed out loud. Still, there we go, life’s full of little surprises!
I can't believe that it's exactly a year since DM stopped.....I AM glad he's started again - it wasn't the same without him!
