DM and I were dashing around working on the grand plan this evening, so this grab shot is the only one I took today.

It’s quite an interesting one though because it shows a slightly macabre scene. This is, of course, Sherri – she’s been seen in these pages many times before and is something of a star in my family. She’s a really tame hen, who loves people and will happily trot around behind me while I mooch around in the garden.

She’s also a bit of a chancer. She makes sure that if there is an unexpected snack to be had, she’s the one who gets it. She’ll stand watching as I dig the garden and she'll jump on anything that looks edible (though her definition of edible is somewhat suspect in my view – it usually consists of the wriggling and/or slimy).

Today she capped her previous ‘best’ in this department. I fed the dogs before we set off out working and was surprised when Rosie was at my heels a few moments later. I popped my head outside the back door, thinking ‘she can’t have eaten all her tea already’. This sight greeted me.

Rosie had been pushed off her meal (she is very easily distracted) by Sherri, who was gleefully tucking in. She was shoving aside the mixer meal to get to the meat and wolfing it down as though she’d found a real treat. I grabbed my camera for a few shots then had a worrying thought…..

…….what flavour was the can I selected for tonight’s doggie dinner? Yep – you’ve guessed it – Chicken…..

Suddenly it no longer seemed ‘cute’ that Sherri had got the better of Rosie and was tucking into her meal, it now seemed extremely unpleasant. I know that in the wild, many birds feed off carrion and indeed live birds but even so, to be tucking into one of your own without an apparent care in the world seemed a bit OTT.

So, I shooed her off and brought the bowl indoors so Rosie could finish her meal. It did, though, beg an interesting question for me – I have always avoided feeding the dogs rabbit flavoured dog food because I’ve always kept rabbits……now I’m keeping hens, should I do the same with chicken food? Shucks – that’s a bit of a worry.
