27th April 2006 - BAD hair day

I do have something of a wicked side (in case you’ve not already spotted it) and this is a shot that I consider to be right ‘up there’ in my wickedness terms. These really are dirty girls aren’t they? Mudhoneyz, wild things and so much more. I had to polish their faces several times before I could get this shot…..which was only no 3 today – how I wish every day was like that! I am a BAD girl today. BTW - in case you're wondering - it's me on the left - too much eye make up!

A man called Martin is to thank for this pic. We were leaning over the fence talking to Erica and up popped Martin. He said ‘could you use some leeks?’ I said ‘I can always use leeks!’ He then proceeded to pontificate on the fact they are small but I think small can be very good indeed. What about mange tout? They’re small yet they are the sweetest things in all the world when picked and eaten straight away on a warm summer day.

What’s wonderful is the giving nature of this – I gave some onion sets to Erica, who gave her surplus to Martin, who gave me back some leeks – the circle of life is complete and very handsomely rewarding.

His leeks have featured for a couple of days now in my cooking – Ewan and Rob managed to get a taster of them in my very own recipe for Cornish Blue stuffed Cornish mushrooms a couple of days ago.

I had this idea on the day the Frith boys came to dinner and this is the first chance I’ve had to execute it. It’s a combination of a celebration of home-grown food and of BAD hair, which is something DM and I suffer from almost permanently. His is a no 4 that grows for a year, through quiffs, punk, eccentric and ultimately to ‘worzel gummidge’. Mine is more explosion in a copper factory but they are both seriously BAD haircuts.

There are days when I am tired. Today is one of them – I have worked solidly for eleven hours – nine on my ‘day job’ and two on the grand plan. I had one idea for my piccy and luckily for me, I made it stick. Although it’s not a first, it’s certainly unusual enough to merit a smirk from me as I sit here and ‘typey, typey, typey’ as DM has just observed as he walks into our den and my fingers are flying over the keyboard and I have a manic smile on my face. Hurrah for Martin’s leeks. Hurrah for inspiration on a bad day. Hurrah for DM for making me smile.

Last year, I was still dreaming (and indeed still, to this day am) of a pic in a Delia book......everyone has to have their dreams don't they?

LOL! at Northy... What a cool idea, and nice execution. I don't suppose we'll see this in your next vegetable and flowers calendar, will we?

The only leeks I've seen lately
are the ones under my sinks.
Probably caused by too much bad hair
down the drain.
:^O
PS: Got a haircut an hour ago from my favorite
Vietnamese female haircutter. She always does a great job.
Thanks Julie!
