28th March - eerie

The moors have been strangely eerie today. The cloud has been rolling around the hillsides, demonstrating how far above sea level we are. Our neighbour’s short-term lodger (and our roofer) came home from Looe to say that it was raining down on the coast – all we got was cloud stuck to the hillside.

I took quite a few photos today and some of them will end up in my Caradon gallery soon but for now, this is my favourite. DM has one almost identical and it’ll be interesting to see if he uses it for his posting today. The first time I saw a ‘hair in barbed wire’ shot was I think Bill Miller’s shot…..though I know one or two others have done it too. Bill – imitation is the most sincere form of flattery!

The sheep who lost their coats on this wire were also dicing with death as the wire is all that separates the rest of the world from Pearce’s Shaft (though it has been ‘capped’ I still wouldn’t cross that wire yet the sheep do it all of the time).

Archie has been off his lead all day, without mishap and he came pretty close to a few sheep and a cat too, yet all he has done is keep a watchful eye. A year ago it would have been madness to consider allowing him that freedom. Mind you, I’m not sure I’ll be so happy to risk it when the nursery lambs come back onto the moors. They are all in fields at the moment because they are all so tiny.

This has been our longest walk of the weekend – at my slow hobbling pace! DM said ‘you lead and I’ll follow’ so we ambled along pretty slowly. I love the moors when they are like this – it doesn’t feel dangerous, though of course it is. It feels like home.

It’s with heavy heart that I post this pic because it is the last time we’ll see the moors for a few weeks – my travelling schedule has put paid to that. Still, the good news is the plastering will be done by the time of our return (courtesy of one of our neighbours) so we will have a truly ‘liveable’ ground floor of our house within a very short time now. Whooppeee!!!!!

Last year, DM and I were treated to some of the best hospitality I've ever experienced - and all from a total stranger! The year before I was lusting after an old wreck!
