I don't very often set foot in a supermarket these days 'in the flesh' as it were. I tend to buy my fresh stuff all in Cornwall in the farm shop and bring what I need back to Sandhurst. The rest of the shopping gets done at sainsburytoyou.com and it's all very easy - a few clicks, delivery the following day and no physical effort from us other than hauling the bags from the doorstep into the relevant cupboards. It's a great system.
I use a 'favourites' list and just click down it ordering the right number of everything that I use regularly. One of the system's shortcomings is that I never see 'new' foods that are being launched because I never browse supermarket shelves.
The other way that the system breaks down is when it's something I don't buy all that often because stuff 'falls off the list' if I don't order it often enough. This means I find myself running short of stuff like tumble drier sheets and peppercorns because they don't need to be bought every month so they fall off the list and I don't remember to reorder.
The last couple of evenings have been irritating in as much as I've gone to grind the black pepper into the dish I'm cooking and found it's empty and there is no more in the cupboard. There are a couple of other similar things - I'd been bought a huge bottle of high quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil by my folks when they were on holiday last year and so have not bought any since. I have been using chilli oil every night for the last week because I don't have any other oil left!!! It's made some of my dishes taste a wee bit strange I must say.
So, today, armed with a little list of forgotten items, I popped into Waitrose in Epsom to buy them. While I was standing pondering which olive oil to buy I noticed this little beauty - hemp oil. Well, I must say, I thought this looked good right from the start.....and then I saw the address and realised it is made in my beloved West Country - not quite Cornwall but as close as you can get without being in the county itself. So, a bottle of it made its way into my basket. A quick pog at the company's website confirmed my suspicions that this will be very good stuff indeed so here it is, before it gets used to roast the last couple of handfuls of tiny, delicious 'salad' potatoes (variety ratte) that were dug at the weekend. Hugh Fearnley -Wittingstall says it makes wonderful roasties so let's see whether we agree. The Observer too is full of its praise.
I can tell you at this point that it smells heavenly - like a good walnut oil (except hopefully DM won't be allergic to it), if the company that makes it is making accurate claims then it’s also very nutritious and looks wonderful - I'll update my posting later with its flavour!!!
My weekend a year ago went much the same as this year....funny what a creature of habit I am.
Technical notes.....the wineglass reflected in the bottle contains the hemp oil, not wine. I've been really trying hard to get better lighting and reflections on my shots so hopefully this is a demonstration of that.
UPDATE: Roasties delicious even though the smell of the oil when cooking was strange. I thought it smelled like fish oil, DM thought it smelled like pancakes!!! Salad dressing next on list of things to try.
