14th October 2004 - sunset over the atlantic

I have had a strange day today, starting with the most stressful of situations and ending with the most relaxing of ones.

My taxi driver chose to go off the route to JFK this morning and circle round Queens in ever decreasing circles. I was terrified. I knew his route wasn’t the way to the airport and I had no way of alerting anyone to my plight. My cell phone only works in Europe and not in the USA. When I challenged the driver he said ‘ there are many ways of getting to the airport’ – I responded ‘but none of them involve doing circuits of Queens…’. I decided to bluff my way out of trouble. I fired up my cell phone and punched in a random number and started a fictional conversation with someone waiting for me at the airport. Luckily he believed me and changed his route and took me there. Whereupon he charged me $280 for the privilege. I tried to get out and he locked me into his cab until I’d given him my credit card. In the event, I was so relieved to be out of the car, I let it go. However, I will be taking it up on Monday with his employers.

My journey home was uneventful and this shot of the Jumbo jet wing at sunset was about the only photogenic moment of the journey.

Tonight though, DM has been serenading me with U2 – ‘All that you can’t leave behind’ – a poignant reminder of the week and a deeply emotionally charged memory of our first date when we listened to this album while feeling the electricity of the first throes of passion. Later, we went to Paris to see them live and I swear there could never be a more sensual time in our relationship….. ah, it’s good to be home!

Sounds very frightening to be trapped in a taxi in that situation, he deserves to lose his job.

Beautiful view, Linda. I cannot believe that taxi driver!

What??? $280 Are you serious? Granted you were coming from Princeton. I hope you took his medallion number. The nerve of him. Was it a yellow cab? I do hope you contact his employer. or the Taxi and Limousine association. here is their website.http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/home/home.shtml so why didn't your company fly you in and out of Newark Airport instead? Grrrr, I'm mad.

What a horrible story about the taxi driver. I hope you can get that righted!
Fun view out the window.

Sensual, huh? Didn't we just have a discussion (via Judemc?) on sensual vs. sexual? Guess I'll have to revisit it to figure out just what type of experience you just had (in Paris, not NYC, obviously).

BTW, be sure to nail that jerk taxi driver.

Such a richness of color and depth in this image, Linda.. quite beautiful offset with the blue sky and the blurred ground. Very very nice.

I was trying to think what I would have done if I were in the cab. I'm shocked about the charges and make sure you fight that. I'd have honest-to-god peed my pants if he told me I owed that much.

WOW that's one nasty cabbie! What an ass! I hope you give his supervisors hell! On a lighter note, and definitely a MUCH happier one, I'm SO glad you're home with DM and your beloved pups! Have a wonderful night!

OMG!! Linda, I can't imagine being in that situation . .NOR what the hell I'd DO about it . .obviously this twerp wanted extra money & was running up the meter to get it, figuring you wouldn't know the difference . . . @$$wipe! His type are what give NYC and USA a bad name . . . I'd love to roll HIM in Archie's . . .well . . you get my drift. SO glad you are home safe =]

It's horrible how the driver took advantage of you. Please don't let it drop, he needs to know he can't get a way with that. Will you be talking to your credit card company, too? That just sucks!
