2nd October 2004 - wild and rugged land

It's been a lovely day here - sunshine and fluffy white clouds all day while we did our chores. We've had more builders here (today, fencing and electrics) and we've mown the lawn, been out for provisions and shopping for fires and Rayburns. Unfortunately the fire and Rayburn men were not around today so we've come away empty-handed but with a better idea of what we need from the 'substitute' man in the shop.

We've experienced a St Matthews Day Parade in Liskeard which was something of a treat and we both cursed the fact that we'd left cameras at home thinking we were just doing chores.

After all the work, we got home and the heavens opened so we sat around hoping for a break to take the dogs out onto the moors. It rained and rained and so we watched the footie scores and results coming in. Boy was that exciting. I said last week we had to do well at Everton if we wanted to be in real contention for a European slot.....and we did it. We beat them at Goodison Park 0-1. By all accounts it wasn't pretty but we ground out the result and came away with three points to take us to 4th place in the table. Wow! it'll probably be short-lived because there are several of this weekend's games yet to play but we're looking pretty good I'd say.

After the excitement of the footie there was a short break in the rain and we decided to risk a walk to the old quarry lake at Witheybrook. A spectacular place but bleak as hell today. Here's Rosie, looking back to see why Archie and David haven't followed us round the corner to the 'secret' pool round the corner from the main lake.

The moors are just amazing in this weather but you can totally see how people end up hopelessly lost - the weather closes in in just a few moments and it's really disorientating. This is a dangerous place but that kind of adds to its charm.
