26th July 2004 - more Brandt - this time the embrace

The Bill Brandt exhibition has proved itself inspirational for us all (DM, GK and myself). One of the images was so expressive to me, its composition not a million miles away from this. I wanted to try to replicate it and asked DM if he’d participate in the shot.

He refused. Point blank.

The reason? Because the original was shot in a bedroom and the implication was that the people embracing were lovers. David didn’t like that which does seem slightly strange to me given that the whole world knows (well certainly all of our family and friends as well as the PBASE community) that we are lovers. He felt that the shot implied sex but I felt differently.

I liked its inclusivity and introspection – it was such an intimate scene. I most of all liked the shape of the woman’s arms on the shoulders and head of her lover. It just struck me as a hauntingly tender image so I had a rethink while I was pounding up and down the pool at lunchtime today and came up with the idea of transposing the scene for a doorstep – easily do-able because of course every home has one. Then I hit on the suitcase and I knew I had a winner because I could use the image twice, in my PotD and my Songs galleries……I have just the right song in mind – watch the gallery in an hour or so!

It’s been good to do a bit of non-work work because I’ve had a shitty day having had my head down writing a proposal all day (except for my hour swimming at lunchtime) but I’ve managed to lose the file and no amount of help from DM has been able to recover it. So guess what I’ll be doing tonight instead of sitting on the sofa with DM drinking a bottle of wine……yep – that’s right, trying to redo in 4-5 hours what I’ve taken all day to do already. Pah pah and more pah…..what did I say about finding that penny?

Oh and DM - no moaning about the non-vertical verticals - you can't give me three nanoseconds to compose and then tick me off about the angle!!!

I love this pic - it looks to me as if he's just got home. And I may not be a photographic technical whiz, but I love the angled wooden bits! It's got a sense of urgency and adds interest.

This has real feeling to it.. love the arms embracing.. I knew it was a homecoming before i saw the song gallery.. It just seems like the embrace of a woman who won't let go again

The position of the arms looks very passionate, not in a sexual sense, but in the sense that the woman is expressing her love. Very nice photo.

Has a war-time feel to it.

Very cool shot Linda , beautifully done . It looks great in B&W and actually the fact it isn't vertical really works .

I think it's really well done, too! Very emotional photo, and the tilted verticals just add a tension, which IMO works well here.

OK, now having seen the song you chose, this is the OPPOSITE of leaving! It's a homecoming! Well, it works BOTH ways, doesn't it! But a homecoming is much better!

DM can't criticise this! HIS photo was BLURRY today!!

I like this, it's actually quite sad, isn't it! To imagine your lover leaving with a suitcase, you clinging in the doorway knowing how you will miss him! I think it's really well done!!
