walking to Holywell

A couple of years ago I saw a book in a remainders bookshop called 'Classic walks in Cornwall' - a book with 60 circular walks so you don't have to worry about how you get back to the car at the end of the walk. It was a bargain - only £1.....now I love a bargain, especially one that is related to my love of Cornwall. A few minutes later, the book was mine!

Every time we go down to Cornwall, at least one of these circular walks is tested. This time no exception! BUT, this time, we had a walk starting on our own doorstep so off we set to complete the 5 miles or so of a walk round West Pentire, Polly Joke and Holywell Bay, finishing with a walk through the sand dunes and across the Kelseys. Wonderful.

The sun shone, the sky was blue, the sea the most perfect jade colour. The dogs ran, we puffed and sweated our way up the steep paths but boy, did we have a great time. It was difficult to look at anything without seeing a photo opportunity.

At one such, I was photographing the sea pounding on the rocks below - a sheer drop of a couple of hundred feet, when I became aware that Rosie and Archie were hurtling around, only feet from the edge. I broke out in a cold sweat at the thought of one of them running over the edge so David held onto them while I took my picture (and this one) then they went back onto leads until we were in a safer environment.

Cornwall is a strange county - many of the local businesses seem to survive despite their actions rather than because of them....it was 4pm on a beautiful Saturday afternoon when we strolled into Holywell village seeking water and ice creams - BOTH the village shops were shut! Perhaps they didn't need the trade?
