One of the things I really like about the Canon (over the Tokina) is its closer MFD. You wouldn't think it makes a huge difference, but the Canon's 9.5" MFD versus the Tokina's 12" MFD does make for more "creative" shots from the Canon. It's not that this is a major strike against the Tokina, but I just really prefer the ability to get closer that the Canon allows in this regard. In each of these images, I got as close as I could with AF.
Minimum Focus Distance is measured from the film/sensor, not the front of the lens.

I just bought the Tokina, I tested the MFD and I've to say that is 15 from the front of the lens this is about 24cm! not 30! maybe you just see what is written on the scale..
about the test if stop the tokina to f3.5, like the canon, you can get closer. It's not fair this test you should have manual focusing whith the same F number
