Oct 9 2005. Tested here are 4 popular lenses:
Canon 17-35 f2.8 L USM
Canon 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM
Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX DC
Sigma 20 f1.8 EX DG RF
This is a very quick test I put together as I only have the 17-35L for a brief time as a loaner from a friend. See the comments embedded in the image itself. The 17-35L was replaced by the excellent 16-35L but is a very capable performer in its own right. I very much like the build, the silent USM, the fast and quick AF, and the "clean" optics. That said, in my 200-300 frames shot with it, I can't say with any confidence it out-resolves the Sigma 18-50EX on my 20D. But it certainly has the nice L build and refinements.
Both lenses are optically very good and both get high reviews, mostly. The 17-35 + 50prime option is a good one but it does require you to have to switch out maybe more than you will like. The 1850 I think is the better way to go; why not add the 50 prime to that? As for the focal range of the 1850, it is more like 18-47mm. Best wishes.

Typo: your instead of you're ;).
One more question, do you think the Sigma is really a 18mm, or more like a 17/19-48mm lens?

Hello fstopjojo,
I've almost seen all of you're lenstests and I think you really deserve some credit for it.
Since I'm thinking of buying the Sigma 18-50/2.8 or the Tamron 17-35 with a 50mm prime, I'd like to know if the difference between 17 and 18mm is really that big. Can you post an example please?
