2x TC Test: Kenko TelePlus "Pro 300" v. Tamron "SP Pro"
Jul 14 2005: Tested here are 2 professional-level 2xTCs from Kenko and Tamron. Camera was 20D and lens was 70-200L IS USM.

The Sigma TCs are very good too, right there optically with the Kenko Pro and Tamron SP. I prefer the K and S because they will fit practically any lens, whereas the Sigma (like the Canon unit), will only fit some lenses. So in my book it's a no-brainer: less costly, similar or better optics, smaller/lighter, will fit more lenses. Go with the Kenko Pro or Tamron SP.
Have you ever tested the Sigma TC's? I'm going to get a 120-300 F2.8, plus a 1.4 and a 2X TC. I was going to get the Sigma ones but your Kenko pro 300 tests are making me consider I should save some money and get the Kenko versions.
I don't have any conclusive evidence that they are the same maker, but I believe they are. Both perform superbly.
According to a topic in FM they are the same manufacturer just different lenses. Is this true?
I have used a 350D. Taping the last three pins. I could try that. Thanks for responding.
That's interesting, Roland. Are you using a 20D? I found that when I had my 70200EX + 2xTC it would lock fairly quickly without much hunting (especially in good daylight with contrasty subject). I'm not sure what to say. How about testing out "taping" the 3 left pins and see how it fares then. It's worth a shot.
I bought the Kenko for my Sigma 70-200 /2.8 and it is sharp... when it locks on focus. Without TC my lens finds focus very quickly... But with TC, it keeps AF hunting like crazy back and forth, and if I am very lucky, it will find focus lock. Extremely annoying when it begins.
Have you seen anything similar... or is it the lack of sunlight in wintertime that is messing with me? Is it supposed to be like this?
They are from the same manufacturer with different brand names
