An f2.8 lens cannot "replace" an f1.4 lens --- that's two stops difference and 4x the amount of light. The prime is the better optic as well, so it all depends on what you need for the lens to do for you. The Tamron 17-50 and 28-75 are also good options in terms of optical performance.

Hi,
I am "still" trying to make up my mind for a FAST lens in mid range category, and these 2 lenses are in my shortlist..
My utility would be to use in indoors, and in lowlight situations. Am worried about buying 3rd party Tamron/Sigma 24-70 2.8, + the sigma 30EX.
Thanks for your tests, can you shed your opinion and comments b/w these 2 lenses? If I get the Canon, does it replace the need to get the 30EX?
