Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG Macro v. Canon 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM

Aug 3 2005: This is a very brief test but one that represents very well the optical performance of my copies. I have decided to keep this test brief and not spend much time posting crops because I could tell immediately the image quality difference between these 2 lenses. I received a new Canon 28-135 IS today (my 2nd copy in 1 year) and tested it against my 24-70 EX. I knew the Canon would be hard-pressed to best this Sigma EX. While optically there is no match between the Sigma and Canon (the Canon stopped down is good), the Canon does have fantastic USM with FTM, along with a very nice build for a non-L lens. The "IS" is splendid in low light, of course. In the end, the speed and optics of the Sigma EX are simply better.

AF speed on the Sigma is very fast, but it's noisier than the Canon (which has ring USM). The EX is definitely the better in terms of IQ, while AF speed it's still fast.

Hi,
I'll be tossing up between these two lenses in the near future, im curious to know how much difference there is between the 24-70 and the 28-135 with autofocus speed in good light. I'll be using it mostly for sport photos but the f2.8 is making me want the sigma more, but im just abit uncertain of the focus speed. Is the sigma much slower in autofocus spped when both are used in good light?

I purchased this lens a few months ago and it has been an excellent outdoor lens with nice color and contrast for me. Good lens to keep on the body while travelling.

The Canon 28-135 w/IS is a mixed blessing of a lens.
It has IS, USM, and some med telephoto capabilities going for it.
However the F Stop rating on it makes it too slow. I have this lens and will be a great travel abroad lens to take long with me to Argentina. I get some nice contrasty colors from it. Been pretty happy thus far with it aside from the slowness of the FStop.
