It's hard to gauge two lenses from different makers as their MTF numbers are produced with differing methods. That is to say, you can't really look at Sigma's MTF and then Canon's MTF and then make any definitive conclusions. The new 55-250 IS looks very interesting, although it seems to me that the 70-300 IS is still the "better" lens. I say that because optically the 70-300 IS is very good, and if the 55-250 IS can even approach its IQ that will be something else. But even if they are comparable optically, the 70-300mm range is more appealing than the 55-200mm. You lose 15mm on the wide end, but you gain 100mm whopping reach on the long. That seems quite significant to me. Now the new 55-250mm is going to have the "newest" IS unit, but that isn't too big in my book. As for the comparison between it and the 18-200 OS, I see them as completely different lenses. The Sigma is really an "all-in-one". That is, it offers you a wide lens as well as a tele. The 55-250mm is only a "telezoom". Missing the 18-55mm range is VERY significant. Build quality-wise, the Sigma should really outperform the new Canon as well. But time will tell how good the 55-250mm IS lens is.

I realize that the new 55-250IS is not yet available, but looking at the MTFs for the two, how would you compare the two?

As often, much people discuss objectives which they never touched, therefore ever tested either. Moreover, I doubt more and more Photozone which does not seem not much to appreciate the lenses Sigma, certain tests of other lenses remain very far from my comparative results... At least this 18-200 OS gives some largely for its price and its extreme focal distance. Moreover the stabilizer is superbly effective.
Still a test which proves your professionalism and serious high level tests of LightRules.
