King Canute

Doughmore Beach, Doonbeg, Co. Clare

Canute was a Danish King of England, who was an able administrator and increased English trade, but is best remembered for his futile attempt to stop the tide from coming in. He died on 12-Nov-1035. According to legend, Canute’s courtiers flattered him into believing that his word was so powerful that even the tide would recede at his command. Canute is said to have taken this compliment literally and had his throne placed by the shore and vainly attempted to command the waves to recede until he almost drowned. An alternative version states that Canute was extremely wise and put on this practical demonstration to show his courtiers that he was not taken in by their flattery. The event is commemorated by a plaque at Bosham. [Bosham, near Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 8LS, UK]. Reference: http://www.wardsbookofdays.com/12november.htm
