Waldeisenbahn Muskau

The Forest Railway of Muskau(Germany), situated close to the Polish border was founded in 1895. This 600 mm Railway line connected several small businesses in the area between Weisswasser and Muskau and helped the industrialisation of the region. Steam locomotives were used for the transport of coal, wood and many other goods produced in the area. A passenger service was not available.
Most of the steam engines used, were obtained at the end of the First World War from the German Military Railways. After WW 2 a lot off engines, wagons and tracks were taken by the Russians as compensation for the war. After the war several brickworks and roof tile factories were supplied with clay. Wood and coal were still major products as well. Operations were stopped in 1979.
In the 80's some friends decided to protect what was left and slowly rebuild some parts of the line and restored wagons. Some Original steam locomotives could be bought back and put back into service.
The line is very idyllic and the association organises several events during the year.
This gallery is a report of a 2 day photo-event in May 2015 where the 60's were brought back to life.
