In Lichterfeld Germany you can visit this conveyor bridge that was formerly used in the opencast lignite mine Klettwitz-nord. This gigantic steel bridge was build between 1989 and 1991. It only operated from March 1991 till June 1992, a very short period. Klettwitz-nord was closed for economical reasons. It was planned to demolish the bridge, but then came the idea to make it open to the public.
In 2000 the bridge was ready to receive the first visitors. Since then, it has been a great Success.
It is one of the largest moving working objects in the world.
502 meters long, 204 meters wide and nearly 80 meters heigh. It used to weigh 13.500 tonnes with the two attached excavators. These days it weighhts 11.000 tonnes. It had 9 conveyor belts to transport the useless excavated materials to the other allready fully excavated side of the bridge to dump it their to a max. height of 60 meters. The conveyor belts worked at a speed of 10meters/sec. The capacity of the bridge was 29.000 mē/hour. Moving speed of the bridge was
13 meters/min. The bridge has 760 wheels from which 380 were powered. It moved on regular railway tracks.
