Lauchhammer bio-towers(Germany)

In Lauchhammer(Germany-former GDR) you find these towers. A medieval castle comes to mind when you see them. Build in 1957 as part of the first lignite cokes factory they were used to clean the waste water that contained harmfull substances. The towers were filled with slag bricks coated with a bacterial film. The water was pumped to the top of the towers and was filtered by the slags.
In total there are 24 towers rising 22 meters high. They stand in groups of 4. These towers are all what is left from this huge factory which once provided work for 15.000 people. They are protected.
