Marge: I think the bowling alley you are referring to was Town Lanes. Deluxe Lanes was further down on Oliver.

These are great pics that bring back a lot of memories. I may have missed them, but where are the pictures of the Riviera theater, the American Legion on Payne avenue, Division Market (if it's still there), the high school, and Ted's Hot Dogs? Also, why did you just take a picture of the Galassi's sign instead of the actual building? I used to love their meatball subs.

Jim Marsh Back in the late '60's and '70's, I visited and did business with St Mary's Mfg co, which was next door to the Wurlitzer plant. It was owned by the Kopczyski family and was a great machining co. This brings back memories for me. Those were the 'GoodOld Days'. Wish I could do that again!

Grew up in NT. Graduated from NTHS in 63. Lived on Sherwood, Erie ave., Summer St. 5th ave., E. Robinson. Too bad our kids didn't have the great advantages we had. Everybody helped everyone, We did stupid things, but not bad things. We never hurt anyone or destroyed property. The pix's bring back such sweet memories of a better time in life and our country. Too bad we can't go back. This world would be a much better place.

I lived my first 8 years in NT. 210 Tremont St. was mom & dad's first home after WWII. We lived on the 2nd floor of a home owned by Mrs. Hurtibese. My grandfather, C. Roy Phillips was the founder and owner of Beacon Devices at 50 Oliver St. He and gramma Hazel lived for many years at 232 Falconer. Beacon - FYI - produced one of the very first automotive sparkplugs, one of the first "windproof" cigarette lighters - The Beacon Doublite - it had 2 wicks and was machined from a block of aluminum. Perhaps most are familiar with Crossman Arms Air Guns. Well Beacon produced the first CO2 bottles that people used to charge them and around 1950 my dad, Oakley S. Phillips, designed the machine that builds the current throw away CO2 cartridges that are still used to this day. Beacon also made a gas regulator and cylinder that was used to charge BEER KEGS!!!!! My first visit to a movie theater was to see the Wizard of Oz at the Riviera - scared the daylights outta me! I did my first "duck&cover" at Goundry St Elementary - LOL These pictures are fabulous and have really taken me back to my roots - NT will always be my home town. Great work!!!!!!!

I was let to this site while looking for information and a photo of Thiels Dairy. I believe it was located in North Towanda. I may not have the spelling correct but would love to find out any information. My dad used to get his dairy products there.

I left this area in 1976, but here I am, back again (since 2002) now retired, disabled. The photos are excellent, whether you're still living in 14120 or not. I think it would be great to add some photos of the City Market, which achieved one hundred years of continuous operation in 2008. Also, I have a funny story for those of you who can remember the way the signs looked on those infamous "your host" restaurants. (For those of you who don't remember, it was a pleasant looking lower-case script or cursive form of typeface, like you might see in a grammar school notebook.) Anyway, I'm away from my college in Ohio, up here visiting "home" in this area for the weekend, and a college roommate friend from Ohio is driving up here to meet me and see "Talas" play one of their superb weekly performances at He & Shes over near where Colvin meets the I-290. Anyway, poor Ed cannot find my home address, so of course, being that this is in 1977, in the days way before cell phones, he found a place from which to call me! So Ed friend stops at this random "place" to use the pay phone, and he calls me, and I'm trying to sort out where he is, but Ed doesn't even have a clue what street he's on, because it's dark and raining. So after a while, he looks out the window at the sign, and there's this awkward pause, and then Ed says something that continues to make me laugh over thirty years later: �I'm at a �your lost� restaurant!� At first I didn't understand what he meant, and then I burst out laughing, and told him, �Ed, that's �your host� not �your lost�!� For decades, every time I would look at their restaurant signs, aside from what would be the missing apostrophe, it was stunning how much that cursive �h� really DID look like an �l� and if you weren't from this area, it seemed to me to be a legitimate, forgivable, if not also humorous, mistake. I grew up on both North Avenue and Fredericka Street. I've been gone for nearly twenty years now but will be returning to NT to make it my home once again in the next few months, as my company will be relocating in NT. I guess you can come home again!

I lived on Lockport Ave, North Tonawanada and went to Meadow Elementary. I love North Tonawanda, left in 1981 at the age of 10 when my father was transferred due to his job. I thought it was a great place for a child to be!

I lived on Ruie for 28 years, near the Wurlitzer plant and Melody Fair. I remember when we could hear the concerts when they just had the tent over the top. Thiels Dairy around the corner on Shawnee and another on Ward Rd too. Thanks for the pictures, haven't been "home" in a long time. Brought back some nice memories. Thanks!

Great photos! I lived on Ward Road- 8 houses north of NF Blvd. Niagara-Wheatfield 1965 grad. Spent a lot of time in NT before joining the USAF in '67 and afterward I lived in Wheatfield and the Falls. Left WNY in '81 for Ohio, still return for visits. Nothing like NT, no doubt! My family left 676 Deerfield Drive in 1967 when I was an 11 year old. Wurlitzer Park in the 1960's as a child felt like pure Americana and had a sense of boundless frontiers. My dad Charles Martin worked as an electrical engineer at Bell Aerospace on various projects, including the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle. There were Buffalo Bill coaches living in Wurlitzer Park in the sixties and various aerospace families. I remember walking to Melody Park in the evening when there were concerts and hearing the music from outside. Thank you for this site and for recognizing the importance of place and how it connects in time to people that we cared about and still do.

I although names and faces escape me, the pictures remind me of very happy times for me. I want to take my children there one day soon so they can see what it was like for me growing up. I grew up on Rumbold Ave, attended both Spruce and Pine Woods Schools. I used to buy penny candy at Gunthers. Remember when Hock's Flower shop had 3 or 4 big green houses before Robinson ST went through there. I used to pass it to go to the store at Meade and Zimmerman - name escapes me. I later moved to far end of Rumbold a couple doors down frm Aunt Tillies, great Chocolate.

Big V, the Wah ha ki (?) was on River Road, going toward the Falls across from Demlers Cider Mill @ "Dead Mans Curve" Also anyone remember Aunt Tillies Chocolates and Al & Gladys Ginthers Meat Market on Rumbold? Might be Gunthers. Used to buy broken chocolates they called seconds for pennies. Ginthers would fill a small bag full of candy for a nickel/dime.

Yeah Lou,I remember Felton Grammer.Miss Natska,Miss Fipps,Mr Wyman.Anyone remember Stanley Derrick and his big horseshoe cleats.felton was a real relic along with Pine Woods school.My older brother went to Pine woods,I think it had a date on the building and it predated the civil war.I graduated 1969 from school on Meadow drive.All of my family still lives there so I get back often.I have lived in Fairbanks Alaska for the last 33 years,nearly time for a change.NT is on the short list.I always enjoy my visits there.Best to all.

I too left NT 4ever after the blizzards of '77. I grew up on Bryant Street and lived in NT my entire childhood through high school. The pictures of Pinewoods and of Oliver Street really bring back good memories. Appreciate those coooollll summers while you can. I have been in New Orleans since leaving, and its so hot you can hardly go outside in the summer, and enjoy it like I could in old NT. I still remember getting "blue lips" from the cold water while swimming at "the pool".

I left NT after the Blizzard of 77. Living in Houston and have visited several times over the years. These pictures bring back some great memories. I was back for the entire summer of 05 and brought the Texas heat with me, I think NT might have had some record temperatures. I sure miss the Friday fish fries, Pizza, wings and of course beef on weck. Yeah we have that stuff in Texas but it is not the same, must be the water. I made my 1st Canal Fest in 05 and loved the car show!! Thanks for the memories

Thanks for the memories! I graduated from NTHS in 1978 ! One of my favorite memories was going trick or treating down Oliver St. and getting huge candy bars from the customers! Also how about SOOS CAFE?!!! Loved that place..everyone went there!!! Anyone remember going on the bus from Tonawanda to Crystal Beach and getting free tickets from Loblaws for good report cards. Much fun living in NT!!

Where is Memorial Pool.? I spent many warm summer days there with my cousin until she had her own pool put in her back yard. Also, no pictures of NT's summer screen porches....a large screen made to fit over the garage door opening.....presto..screen porch.

I graduated in 1972, too. Got married and moved to Maryland in '73. The pictures are fantastic!!! They bring back so many great memories. I still order orange chocolate from Platters every Easter!

NT Class of '91 here... been gone since '97 with the Air Force, though I still come back for visits. Been all over the world, yet nothing will compare to home- great Polish/German food, chowder on Saturday mornings, best wings and pizza on Earth. Thanks for stirring some good memories with these photos! After reading through some of the comments, I noticed no one mentioned Martin's on Oliver St. My sisters and I used to get our "penny" candy there in the early '80s. "Freshmart Donuts!"

These are wonderful. I graduated from NT Senior High School on 06-26-66. Graduation was held on the football field (Vetter Field) behind Payne Avenue Junior High School. Remember Felton Grammar School when we had 7th grade in the morning and 8th grade in the afternoon? I've been gone since the end of July 1978, and I still miss home. Now I'm in Lincoln, Nebraska. Boring Stinkin Lincoln. It ain't home. Pizza here sucks. And they can't make Buffalo Wings to save their soul. Love the pictures. The homestead is at the corner of Linden and Erie. An NT cop bought the house many years ago when my folks Russell and Doris Mallory retired to Florida (both deceased now). I went to Wurlitzer Elementary, Felton Grammar, Payne Avenue Junior High School and then three years at North Tonawanda Senior High School. Thank you for the memories. I am grateful.

If anyone is looking for anything specific - like the Whale (Tonawanda actually)- try contacting Bill Wittkowsky through the Tonawanda NEWS. He has a million pictures. These were great. Grew up on North Ave, born at DeGraff and still live here. Remember the little Mom & Pop places like Panek's Meat Market (one on Wheatfiled and one on Seventh? How about Bonk's (Oliver) and Krenke's (Felton and Oliver). Remember Archie's (Oliver). There is still a little market - Best Taste, I think - on Oliver near OLC church. They have great food! Oh, there was a little store where Niko's used to be (Ward Road Market?) and Melanthine's near Gratwick School (Payne and Stenzil). The Plaza used to hold Hallmarks, Sample, Brand Names, Allen-Mack Pharmacy, Clancy's and WT Grants. Let's not forget Murphy's.

I left NT in 1991 for the Air Force and am currently stationed in Alaska, I get back every so often and not much has changed. I love that fact. Dan Alexander was correct in his comment, you never know how good it was till you have left. Sad part is that Louies taveren no longer exists.
