Hunting from the Kennels March 12, 2005

Closing hunt of the season. Eleanor was huntsman, Mary, Jill, and Lee were whips. There was only one field with Werner as Field Master. There were fourteen in the field. Following Werner was Stephanie, Scott, Heidi, Jane, Tess, Fran, Roger, Sue, Jean, Lei, Stacy, and both Leslie's It was not good scenting conditions. We started down Benne Road and started the first draw from within Brommelsiek park. The best hounds hit early but were running mute on a coyote that ran across Schwede then across DD at the Dardenne and into the Wildlife area. Eleanor took the remaining hounds across Schwede Rd behind the old tenant house to see if she could hear the hounds. On one run Roger's horse cut the back of his leg, since we were closer to My Half Farm than the kennels I ran back there and with the assistance of a car follower (my mother in law) we were able to get Roger's horse patched up well enough to get him back to the trailer. Roger reported that his horse will be fine but needed 8 stitches. We then went toward Duggans and crossed the Dardenne Creek and headed up the hill almost to Dier Road. Eleanor was still looking for the lead hounds in that original run. The hounds weren't finding much and no more hounds appeared so Eleanor decided to draw back toward the kennels. As we jumped the coop onto Schwede road I noticed my horse was slightly off and noticed she had cut her heel so I decided to call it a day. It had already been 3 hours and over 14 miles. Of course right after I headed for home, the field viewed a grey fox. We again had a split pack and some went down the pipeline behind Chris' house and others came back across Schwede. As I was untacking my horse I saw 8-10 hounds speaking and running hard on a line that ran right across the back of our horse pasture and into the Cunningham Creek. I immediately grabbed my radio and advised Eleanor. Meanwhile Jill was trying to keep up with the other pack on the pipeline. She saw a new gate and headed through it only to realize she was on property we weren't supposed to be on. She immediately turned around but not before she was seen by the landowner. As I headed back to the kennels in my car I saw Mary and two members of the field (also hack overs) that were pulled over by the local Sheriff on Wilson Road (should have got a picture of that). Also sometime during the day Heidi and Fran had separated from the field to go around some jumps. Heidi's horse stepped in a hole in a creek crossing and immersed Heidi in water up to her waist. (wish I had been around to take a picture of that). So our closing hunt we had one injured horse, one person almost arrested, and one person went swimming. Can't wait until next year. Temperature ranged from 52 to 54 degrees F. Winds from the East at 5mph. Barometer 30.2 Sunny beautiful day. My GPS reported 2:18 time moving 1:15 time stopped, Max speed 23.2 mph. Moving average 6.1 mph, overall average 3.9mph.
