We had the morning on ship before we were to arrive in Ketchikan. Mom and I did some shopping on ship. She bought a bunch of $10 scarves and I got a plaid scarf to go with my new jacket and some gold beads that made up a spectacular necklace. We then competed in the putting tournament for Dam Dollars but didn’t score anything other than one dollar each as we missed all of our putts. We found it was difficult to put on a rocking/listing ship. We arrived in Ketchikan around 1PM and had to wait for another cruise ship to leave before we could dock. We had quite the site of many bald eagles fishing in the bay. There must have been a dozen or more. My brother said they were as common as cockroaches. We toured town for a while checking out the jewelry and souvenir shops. We also checked out the fur stores. I found a nice leather coat with Fur collar. My mother found another Russian box. We then took an evening float plane ride on a Dehavelin Beaver. This was a single engine high wing float plane. The airplane had seats for 8 so we had the plane to ourselves with one empty seat. The engine was a 9 cylinder radial that put out around 450Hp. The tour took us to the Misty Fjords. We landed in the fjord and stood on the pontoons looking at the clear water which was surprisingly full of jelly fish. We then headed back and landed near the cruise ship. Then we noticed star fish and jelly fish all around the dock. We then boarded the ship and departed around 7:30pm. The entertainment that night was Eddie Holman who was the singer of the song “Lonely Girl” He saved that song for last and did a good job at age 60.
