Saturday Morning 17 December 2005 at 10:24; Panaroma Drive, Parow

The car was billowing a small amount of smoke as I approached the intersection. I drove around the corner, parked my car and took my camera out of its bag. I took the first photograph as the flames started to lick from underneath the bonnet of the car. A passing motorist discharged a small fire extinguisher into the engine compartment. It had no effect on the fire. Two bigger fire extinguishers were delivered by car from a nearby garage. Discharged into the engine compartment, there was a lull in the flames. A bystander openened the driver side door and moments later the car again erupted in flames, this time the interior burned furiosly. The siren of the fire brigade became audible. They arrived, pulled up next to the car and doused the flames with copious amounts of water, disconnected the battery and rendered the car safe. A tow truck moved in, it was all over.

From the first photograph to the arrival of the fire brigade it was six minutes - and it was all over a few minutes later - all watched by the shocked owner of the car, Mrs Loubser from Parow.
