So we know we can’t get more than 11.5 EV DR from a cruddy Canon Sensor, right. Wrong! The reason for the reduced DR is the relatively high read noise at low ISO’s. At high ISO’s the read noise is actually significantly lower. The solution? Pull ½ the image off the sensor at ISO100 and ½ at ISO1600, interleaved as Magic Lantern’s DualISO does. I used a flash for this shot, but got about 14EV Dynamic range out of a 5DII. Unfortunately you do loose a bit of resolution in the highlights and shadows, but it’s still pretty darn good.
