This is a rather ordinary sports photo, but the way it was achieved is rare today and takes a certain amount of chutzpah. The thing is, it was shot with a Samyang 85mm f/1.4. Yup. A short tele manual focus lens, shot wide open at close range. Pulling it off was certainly not easy, as you can't rely on prefocusing in these circumstances (subject constantly moving, and depth of field very narrow), and there's not much you can really do beyond take lots of photos and practice. The one thing that can help is to stand in the center of the turn on the roller derby track. This means that as the players go around you, their distance to you doesn't change as much as if they were going straight towards you, making it much easier to track focus. And of course, if the focus is merely close enough, the result can be fudged by sharpening with a large radius.
