Esteemed Judges,

This is my second entry to the First Annual Photogeek Photo Contest. This time, the submission is for the category "Dynamic Range Demonstration".

I bought a D800 to take photos like this. The model is indirectly illuminated by late afternoon light from a single window. It was not possible to properly expose for the model's face without blowing out the area directly illuminated by the light (mirror frame, hardwood floor). In fact, it was the model's own considerable experience that kept her out of the direct light, which would have resulted in blown highlights on her dress.

The photo was then post-processed in Lightroom 4 in order to hit upon a look akin to chiaroscuro, while keeping the histogram from cutting off at either end. I don't even know if a fill flash could have been used to create a photo like this, but If so, I'd love to hear about how to do it.
