Welwitschia Drive and Moon Landscape

The WelWitschia (welwitschia mirabilis) is endemic to Namib desert. It is found in western part of Namibia up to south-western part of Angola. Although the plant looks as if it has many leaves, it has only two. The leaves (till six meters long) are the longest-lived in the plant kingdom, they are evergreen ang generally broad and flat. Welwitschia is considered to be a gymnosperm. The female plant has large cones, while the male plant has flowers. It is a long life plant. Many examples in Welwitschia Flache are hundred years old. The oldest living specimens are estimated at 1500 to 2000 years. Near Welwitschia Drive (only some kilometres of bad gravel road) you find the rocky desert of "Moon Landscape" a lunar landscape of eroded hills and valleys carved by the Swakop river.
