Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina)

Seven subspecies of this turtle are currently recognized.
Box turtles in Alabama occur in a bewildering array of shapes and color patterns.

This gallery attempts to demonstrate this variation.

Most box turtle populations in Alabama are intergradient combinations involving 2 or 3 subspecies including:
T. c. carolina, T. c. major, and T. c. triunquis (the Three-toed box turtle)
with characteristics of the former predominating.
