The Cascade Fire, exactly 1 year prior to the pictures taken here (July 25, 09), devastated thousands of acres south of Red Lodge.
I hiked the Timberline Trail, one of many charred trails. Last time I hiked it, over a decade ago, it was lush green and direct sunlight penetrated few areas of the trail. Parts of the trail could even feel clausterphobic. But wow!! What an experience to hike the trail now (and there were A LOT of people hiking it and still fishing in the upper lakes).
Where once you could see for maybe 15 or 20 feet, you can now see for miles. Rather than having a sense of sadness or loss, I found myself at great peace walking through the area. I dare say . . . I liked it.
