Japan Bike Tour 2008

On September 4th, I flew to Japan for a two month self-contained bike tour with friends Jay and Geno as well as Jay's son Andrew and his friend Korey. Although we have a planned route which encompassed the islands of Hokkaido, Honcho, Shikoku, and Kyushu, we did not have a specific time table or a final destination. Our tour would conclude when our allotted time of two months ended on November 4th, 2008. In the end, our bike tour as a group of five ended in Nagano, about half the distance through Honchu. Guess we'll have to return one day to finish Honchu and the other islands. During our bike tour, we rode a total of about 1,700 miles and climbed approximately 73,000 feet. Jay and Andrew's ability to read and speak Japanese allowed us to venture off the beaten path and afforded me the opportunity to see and enjoy so much of Japan (and the people) at an intimate level well beyond anything I could have imagined. It would be difficult to describe in words, all that had occurred during our tour. So I hope that the pictures below adequately tell the story of our journey. After 2 months, there were a lot of pictures. I've included some remarks with each picture and indicated the day of trip which covered 60 days.

Hey you guys Ward and I knocked off Mt. Agassiz last week 13983 ft. Great hike but tough we both got sick. Hot Creek still closed, but we found some great soaking out in the desert. Hope all is going well for you and that you are having a great time. DD

I hope that the recent earthquakes in the surrounding area haven't put a damper on your schedule. Remember, always ride with your helment and your lifevest. Riding the Loomis area jut isn't the same without you guys. Barbara and I are packing our bags for our bike trip to China/Vietnam. If you find yourselves in the area, be sure to stop by. Ohayo, Japaneersters! I'm sure your flights all went smoothly and safely and that by now you are well on the road to adventure. I hope you're in good spirits, enjoying each other's company, reporting no saddle sores, taking time to stop at every onsen, and eating like kings. Here's wishing you smooth roads and good weather. A little precipitation perhaps, but no tsunamis! We're looking forward to your pictures. Happy trails.
