July 2002: My first time at Badwater. Little did I know I'd be running the race just 2 years later. |
David & I crewed for Steven Silver with Blade Norman (in Speedo) as crew chief. Steven made it look easy and FUN! |
I think we even smoked a cigar here on Towne Pass |
Steven's finish (38:36) was inspirational. With crew David, Blade, and Lisa |
2003 was Badwater's first organized medical team. Here's me the 2nd morning trying to leave Stove Pipe Wells to get some sleep |
Kari Marchant (left) worked hard as crew and pacer and friend to all at Badwater 2003 |
I ramped up my anemic weekly mileage when David and I ran 70 miles of the Western States trail over Memorial Day weekend |
Then, Wendy, Cheryl, Gunhild & I (the "Quad Squad") ran a 220-mile Ameri-cana Relay from Nelson BC to Sandpoint, ID |
Each pair will run 50-60 miles over 220 miles of road |
The Relay was excellent Badwater training. The hills were nearly as steep as Towne Pass (if only they were miles longer!) |
Lots of hilly opportunities through Canada |
I won't be seeing these out on the Badwater course! |
Being that we had only 4 runners, we caught only brief naps--if that-- in the back of the van |
We ran through the night into the next morning - great training. This is near the Canadian border. |
The only ultra team of 4 females vs 12-runner teams: We finished 4th place overall in 36hrs 32 mins! |
Next up, I paced David 38 miles to the finish line of his first Western States 3 weeks before Badwater |
Wendy O'Neill, Kevin Carroll, and Gunhild Swanson -- A few of our Spokanite friends with whom we run on Tower Mountain. |
This is Dennis Clute who is in charge of keeping the atmosphere filled with fun and laughter |
Dennis going uphill to (hopefully) catch up to Kevin and Gunhild |
Nice view of the valley with snow-capped Mt. Spokane in the distance |
valley view |
View from Day Mountain, Spokane ( I didn't do all my hill training sitting down) |
I ran more and more roads as Spring turned to Summer, still averaging 25 miles per week, and then I ramped up my heat training. |
I always wonder, Is this really the evolutionary end? |
