Birds of Quail Valley

These are birds that have been seen in the Quail Valley subdivision in Missouri City. They are also my "backyard" birds as I have seen them all from my yard. Many are migratory birds that stopped briefly to rest, enjoy the bird bath, and eat a little before continuing on their way.

Was thrilled to see the Bald Eagle flying over Quail Valley near Hwy.6 and 1092 on Saturday, 04/16/11 and today, for the first time ever, we had a brilliant blue Indigo Bunting at our feeder. Absolutely lovely!

we've had a 'painted bunting' for four days now at our feeder. we saw one in May for two days. They are so beautiful!

1. I saw a large hawk-like bird (20+ inches?) standing "in the grass (odd?)" under one of the 15-20 foot trees directly across the street from the driveway of the old Robinson Estate/abandoned house about 5 PM Friday, Oct. 15. Also, I think I saw the same "large hawk-like bird " which was chased out of a tree when golfers were searching for their golf ball about 9 AM, Friday (same day) about 500 yards South of the 5 PM sighting.. 2. The large hawk-like bird was chased out of a tree about 9 AM Friday, (same day), immediately adjacent to, AND BETWEEN, the lake just North of the El Dorado #1 green and the large gray water district water tanks. I am a golf marshal and I was parked there, waiting in my golf cart between the lake/pond and the large gray water tanks because 2 golfers had hit their golf balls close to me and I was waiting to show them where their balls ended up. When one of the golfers approached his ball near the edge of the pond, this large hawk-like bird, with at least a 3+ foot wing span flew out of the nearest tree about 30-40 feet from me and over the lake/pond away from us. This happened about 9 AM, Friday. I think I saw the same bird, 500 yards South of there, on the other side of the lake about 4 PM, on the ground across the street from the old Robinson house driveway under the small trees within 20 feet of the street curb. 3. I'm a long time student of birdwatching and try to match up large raptor-like birds with Red-Tailed Hawkes around here and this one may be just that, because of the light and my position, and I was unable to make sure.. So I'm guessing it may have been an "Immature, or even a mature Red Tailed Hawk, as it was really large. 3. The location near that lake/pond makes sense for a raptor as there are all types of bird there all year long. 4. I remember 10 years ago when I was trying to confirm exactly what the Mississippi Kites really were when there were only 2 of them around here. Now there seem to be about a 10+ of them arond here. 5. Have you determined where the Monk Parakeets have their "communal apartment nesting" location? 6. I hunted ducks and geese for over 50+ years on the Texas coast and inland lakes but NEVER, ever saw a Black Bellied Tree duck... Then about 6-7 years ago, I was putting on La Quinta #10 and counted more than 110 of them all at the same time. That was a shocker... We ahve more now and they are on all the golf courses in the area. Who can miss tham with the coral colors! Please help me confirm the hawk-like bird frequenting QV MUD's pond. The one near the water and sewer plant and geysers.

Beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing. I live on East Creek Club and our house backs up to Oyster Creek. An Owl lives in our back yard (creek area), which we really enjoy observing. I told my husband I see the Bald Eagle flying around occasionally. He told me Bald Eagles don't live around here. I'm printing these pics to show him :)

Wow, these are wonderful to see. Wish I had the tenacity and the talent to capture on film and then to correctly identify all of these critters. Keep up the fine work, and I'll try to keep my camera ready when I go for walks around the disc golf course.

It's too bad we no longer see red-headed woodpeckers in our pecan tree or the dickcissels in the open fields on Cartwright Rd.
