Helgoland, also spelled Heligoland is an island 40 miles off the shore of NW Germany in the North Sea. There is a large island and a small (dune) island. The tall island is divided into Upper and Lower sections. There are no cars on the islands. It was under Danish, British, and finally German control and was an important military base in WWI and WWII. It's now a popular spot for tourists and scientific research on birds and the health of ocean plants and animals.
