Conwy, Wales

King Edward I defeated Llewelyn ap Gruffudd in 1277, and arranged the building of the Conwy Castle in 1283 as part of a plan to build fortresses to subdue the Welsh. This medieval town of Conway did not outgrow its town walls until the 20th century and is one of the best-preserved castle/walled towns in Europe.
