Kaisei

San Diego, CA

Length: 151’
Beam: 25’
Draft: 13’
Sail Area: 8,500 sq. ft
Rig: Brigantine
Built: 1987 Gdansk, Poland
Home Port: St. John's, Antigua

Originally commissioned for use by the Polish Sail Training Association, she was built in Gdansk, Poland, and christened Zew. She was acquired by the Sail Training Association of Japan and renamed Kaisei, which translates as “Ocean Planet.” For 14 years, Kaisei acted as a global ambassador. Able to berth 45, she has sailed thousands of miles with crew members from over 26 countries. The challenging and sometimes harsh conditions of life at sea have helped dissolved many cultural boundaries. Kaisei is considered a floating testament to world peace, conservation and education. In 2005, Kaisei joined the Ocean Voyages Institute’s fleet to continue her mission of educating the world in the maritime arts and preserving the oceans with a crew of international sailors, working off the coast of Southern California, and reaching into the South Pacific. This is Kaisei’s third Festival of Sail.
