The last underground subbituminous coal mine in the Drumheller Valley, Alberta Canada closed in 1981. Mining first began in the Valley in 1911, Many coal mines opened and closed in the Valley. The coal became famous as a high quality heating coal. The mines attracted men from all parts of the world. These miners came to work and brought their families but many moved onwards when the mines began to close down due to loss of markets. Reminders of the mines, the men and their families still exist in the various small hamlets. The last coal mine, The Atlas, has been preserved as a National Historic Site and is open to the public. This Gallery intends to help preserve the memory of some of the old-time Drumheller Valley coal miners.
