The construction of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (Szent Péter és Szent Pál székesegyház) began in the 11th century. It was soon destroyed in a fire. The new building was completed in the first part of the following century. Invasions, mainly by Turks, lead to much destruction of the building. The city was occupied by the Ottoman Empire from 1526 to 1686.

During the following centuries, various repairs and modifications were made. In 1877, Austrian architect Friedrich von Schmidt was commissioned to redo the building. Much was destroyed. The baroque altars and other furnishings were sold off. Between 1962 and 1968 repairs and restorations were made to the 19th century Neo-Romanesque cathedral.
