The poinsettia is native to Mexico and Guatemala where it is known as Noche Buena, the same term used for Christmas Eve. The English name is due to Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico (1825-1830) who sent samples of the plant home to the United States. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, the plant is called Cuitlaxochitl.
